The secret to being a successful photographer is changing your mindset

Why changing your mindset can be the most powerful thing you do for your photography career.

When I first started my photography career, I really wanted to work in fashion and travel.

In the first two to four years of my career, I found that I was mainly working events and doing weddings, and I didn't want to like it because that wasn’t the photographer I thought I wanted to be.

A couple of years into my career, I realized I actually loved giving people memories of a lifetime, and I absolutely loved sharing that with them. Plus, I loved what it allowed me to do with my schedule. Since most events get booked a year in advance, you can actually plan your whole year around certain events that are happening!

So here’s the thing about success – you need to let go of any specific ideas about what you want your job to look like. You can have goals, but you also need to allow yourself the space to explore the possibilities, learn from your experiences, and lean into your journey.

You might be wondering, “how will changing my mindset help me succeed?” Perhaps the language that motivational coaches use feels a little too “woo woo” for you. You might feel like changing your mindset isn’t really gonna make a big difference, so why even bother?

However, you don’t need to dive deep into “manifesting” or start studying the Law of Attraction to change your mindset!

Small changes to your thought pattern will compound over time, and one day, you’ll wake up and suddenly realize that you feel and think differently, and that you’ve managed to completely shift your mindset!

I like to think of it like building a house. If you were to build yourself a house, you’d want to make sure you're using the right materials, the soil is good, and it's in a good location. Once the house is built, if all the materials are high quality and the foundation of the house is well-built, then you can be confident that your house isn’t going to collapse, flood, or catch on fire due to faulty construction.

You can rest knowing that when you come into your house, you have a solid, solidly constructed foundation to support you. Building your business and achieving success works the same way!

Working on your mindset and relearning how you approach concepts can be one of the trickiest things to do, but it’s necessary if you want to shift your business towards the direction of success. Fortunately, once you get started, everything becomes easier!

The best way to start shifting your mindset is to start recognizing your limiting beliefs and working towards changing them. From there, you can start letting go of certain thoughts and ideas that cause resistance, freeing you to pursue bigger and better things.

Changing your mindset works because your brain perceives the world around you according to an internal system based on YOUR life experiences, in the unique way you perceive things. It sounds wild, but it’s true – we create our own reality.

So if you want to be a successful photographer, begin by changing your mindset. See for yourself how little changes can add up to big results!
